What makes an answer "high signal"?
Interviewers are looking for signal — concrete evidence they can use to evaluate a candidate. A high-signal answer gives the interviewer clear data points. A low-signal answer leaves them guessing.
Four dimensions determine signal strength:

How interviewers use signal
After an interview, the interviewer writes a debrief document that synthesizes their assessment. Strong signal makes their job easy:
With signal: "The candidate demonstrated clear ownership of a complex migration project, making a well-reasoned trade-off between timeline risk and system reliability. They quantified the outcome ($400K in cost savings) and showed learning by implementing automated testing afterward."
Without signal: "The candidate seemed like they worked on a migration. They said it went well."
The first write-up gives the debrief panel data to evaluate. The second gives them nothing.

Answer:
"When I was a product manager at a SaaS company, I decided to delay our flagship feature launch by 3 weeks. The sales team had already committed the launch date to several prospects, and my VP initially pushed back hard. I made this call because our beta testing had revealed a data corruption bug that affected 2% of accounts — low frequency but catastrophic when it hit. I pulled the data together, showed the VP the projected support cost if we launched with the bug ($150K in engineering time plus churn risk on 3 enterprise accounts worth $800K ARR), and proposed a revised timeline. The VP agreed. We used the extra 3 weeks to fix the bug and add a data integrity check that caught similar issues going forward. We launched to zero critical incidents. Two of the three at-risk enterprise clients signed during the extended beta, and our first-month NPS was 72, compared to a company average of 45. The uncomfortable learning for me was that I should have pushed for more beta coverage earlier — the bug was findable, and I didn't prioritize testing enough in the original plan."
